Hakeem Abdul Hameed - A Visionary
Hakeem Abdul Hameed (September 1908 – 22 July 1999) was a prominent figure in the field of Unani medicine in India. As the founder of Jamia Hamdard and a former chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, he played a pivotal role in advancing education and healthcare. His lineage traced back to Kashgar (modern-day Kashi in Xinjiang, China), from where his ancestors migrated to India during the Mughal era under Emperor Shah Alam.
He also established Hamdard Laboratories, serving as its chief trustee, and was widely celebrated for his contributions to traditional medicine and cultural heritage. Hakeem Abdul Hameed received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. In 1983, he was honored with the Avicenna Award, and in 2000, the IRCICA Award for his efforts in preserving cultural heritage and promoting scholarship was conferred upon him by the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture in Istanbul, Turkey. He was also the elder brother of Hakeem Muhammad Saeed.
